Power Source

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the incredible power we have
access to by being a child of God. I
grew up a staunch Southern Baptist, and I thank God for the solid foundation I
received as a result, but let’s be honest, the Holy Spirit was not something
that was taught or talked about a whole lot on any given Sunday. We sang about Him in the Doxology and I knew
He was part of the Trinity, but beyond that I was clueless. As I moved into my adult years, I was fortunate
to experience different types of worship in other parts of America and around
the world, which opened my eyes and ears and heart to a whole new realm. I found myself recently thinking about
certain things that are spiritually a little outside my comfort zone and saying
to myself “I believe God can do this
or that” or “I believe God can move
in this way or that”. And then the
thought occurred to me, “If I believe
it, then why would I not want to take advantage of all the benefits”. It would be like if I had a disease and sitting
across from me was a doctor who had a vaccine that would cure my disease. I sat there and watched the doctor administer
the vaccine and people get cured, but when the doctor asks if I wanted to take
the vaccine, I would say, “No, I believe that you have the cure and I see how
it is benefitting those you are giving it to, but I think I’ll pass on the
vaccine and just watch.” Wow, that is
crazy, right? None of us would ever do
that, but I find myself doing that spiritually.
I am a creature of habit and I gravitate towards what I am used to and
comfortable with. I find that the deeper
I go with God, the more I am challenged to strip away the limitations,
pre-conceived notions, expectations and what I am comfortable with. There is so much more to God than my little
brain can even begin to conceive. But I
do know one thing; I want to experience EVERYTHING that God is and EVERYTHING
he has for me. I don’t want to watch
from the sidelines, I want to be IN THE GAME, the WHOLE game. God will take me as far as I am willing to go.

Read Frances Chan's FORGOTTEN GOD. It is a great book on the Holy Spirit. Also Not A FAN is great too. We Baptists do get creeped out at the mention of the Holy Spirit when He's as much a part of the Trinity as Jesus is. Chan says Jesus said him leaving was way better because then everyone would have the Comforter. Only comfortable people don't need the Comforter! Wow!!!!

There's a line in a commercial right now that I love and it fits this perfectly when applied to the Christian life: " I want to leave this life exhausted!'
